The difference between ELC and standard coolant is ELC comes as a premix of glycol and de ionized water and "SCA's". Supplemental coolant additives are molybdenum and nitrate. They are used to prevent the formation of air bubbles on the coolant side of cylinder walls. This only occurs in diesel engines and as combustion takes place on the other side of the cylinder wall, the bubbles explode. Over time this can drill a hole through the wall and leak coolant into the oil. Very bad thing to have glycol in your oil. There are test strips to check the SCA level of your coolant. Standard coolant has no SCA's. Cat brand strips only work in Cat ELC. Fleetguard strips are supposed to work in most brands but not Cat or Bobcat ELC. ELC has little benefit in gas engines other than not having 2 types of coolant around. If you do change any over to ELC, flush out all of the old coolant. No harm in mixing the two but if you have anything other than ELC, you have defeated the purpose. A filter that has additive is not recommended with ELC, just a plain filter. MitchcoELC can be purchases as concentrate as well. I buy it premixed for convenience reasons, we have a lot of different people in and out of the shop grabbing it so having it pre mixed is just easier. You waste less too because you don't throw away the partial jugs laying around that you don't know the mix ratio of. Plus the water they use to pre mix it is better than tap water.Not all ELC's are designed for HD diesels, so you do have to watch for that. The main thing is the prevention of cavitation like you explained.Its important to just buy the test strips for your brand coolant. IIRC Cat ELC is Delo, but that may have changed. It was at one point. Bobcat ELC is propylene glycol based IIRC versus most of the others which are ethylene glycol. PG is "food safe" and considered better for the environment if spilled. It also requires no embitterment because it is very nasty tasting unlike EG which is very sweet. PG and EG coolants cant be mixed.Most of the ELC's will work in auto applications but it is best to check and make sure especially with foreign cars. Most of the domestic vehicles are very simple. Some of the euro coolants are designed around europes hard tap water and are not always necessary in the US.I use Delo HD ELC 50/50. Buy it for less than $8/gallon in bulk delivered. It is offered as a factory fill at every truck OEM and standard at many of them. There are a lot of high qualtiy ELC's out there to choose from, but they are not all created equal so do your homework on them.
IFarmtoo - 1/13/2014 07:51 Their is some truth to the fact that ELC is not for everyone and all operations. I would say trucking fleets probably have the most to gain from ELC. They buy new trucks so its in their from the factory, its easy to maintain most will have the 50/50 mix to just add to system and no additives to worry about and it does last a lot of miles witch they do drive. But it does cost more so you are paying for that convenience. Then looking back in history not much green coolant was ever changed until a water pump, radiator, or hoses needed replacing and a lot of them went a long time if the additives were maintained. t.I pay less than $8/gallon for pre mixed Delo ELC. To get premixed green coolant from them would be $2/gallon less. Doesn't take a math whiz to figure out the savings there.A lot of people never maintained their green coolant which was an issue. The big issue is if it does not have additives to prevent cavitation on wet sleeve motors. Many people just dumped automotive coolant in and over time that can cause issues.

Usually, I take a water hose with nozzle (municipal water supply, so should have less minerals than well water if any remains in system) and flush through the system. I take hoses loose, run water through the heater, radiator, block, anywhere I can. I just keep running water through until clear. I never used the flush treatments in a bottle. Any other recommendations?Thats generally what I have done unless there is some scaling or other buildup that needs to be removed.If Cat is closest and easy to get, its good stuff and generally priced in line or cheaper than the parts stores. Delo is not easy to come by without a Chevron dealer close by. If you have a PACCAR dealer they will have TRP ELC which is also very good. I am not sure who makes it, but Delo has been the Factory fill coolant for Paccar since 05 unless something has changed.Some of the newer engines are wanting nitrite free coolant, Delo and the others do offer NF versions of their ELC's. Nitrite+ Molybdate are the key for protection against cavitation in motors prone to it, not all diesels will cavitate. Molybdate also does a good job of protecting the solder in radiators and oil coolers . OAT coolants are harder on solder so the molybdate helps offset that.
