Facebook Hide Chat Online Status

The Facebook Messenger default settings show when you are active online and available to chat with a co-worker or friend. Your connections see a green dot on their Facebook Messenger app or Facebook website that indicates you're available, and you can see which of your connections are available to receive messages in real time by locating the green light next to their names. This makes it easy to connect with someone in real time when you know they are online and can see your message.

In the Messenger app and in Messenger at the Facebook website, you can hide the fact that you are online, and other users will not know you are active. In the Facebook browser version, you have more options for your visibility than in the app. Either way, you are not required to show as active on chat. You can send and read messages regardless of your status.

To turn off the green light on Facebook Messenger on your mobile device, open the Facebook Messenger app on your smartphone or tablet. Tap your profile picture at the top of the open app. Scroll through the Setting options until you reach the "Active Status" option and tap it. Turn off the ability of other users to see when you are active or recently active by selecting the dot or slider next to the text labeled "Show when you're active_"_ in the screen that opens. A popup window opens noting that you won't be able to see when your friends are active or recently active. Select "Turn Off" to complete the action and remove the active status and green dots inside the Messenger app. You can still chat and see everyone in your chat list, but not their active status.

Facebook Messenger looks different when viewed in a web browser because it is integrated with Facebook as a whole and does not work as an independent app. Your chat contacts appear in a panel to the right of the main Facebook screen. When you are online, you can see a green dot next to each person on the list who is also currently online. When you are inactive, you can still see their names and send messages to them, but you can't see if they are online, and they can't see whether you are online.

To turn off your active chat status, scroll to the bottom of the list of chat contacts and click the gear Settings icon. Select "Turn Off Active Status." At that point, you can opt to "Turn off active status for all contacts," "Turn off active status for all contacts except..." or "Turn off active status for only some contacts..." in the popup screen.

There's two ways to ignore an unwanted group chat from Messenger. First, you can either long-press or swipe left on the target thread you want to hide to reveal more options, then tap on the three-line menu button and select "Ignore group" on the popup. Tap "Ignore" (Android) or "Ignore Group Chat" (iOS) on the prompt to mute and hide the chat.

If you're on an iPhone, open the app and tap the silhouette icon in the bottom-center, then tap on chat bubble icon with three dots towards the top-right. Select the group chat you want to restore inside the "Requests" page, then send a message as you normally would to remove its "Ignore" status.

Your followers can't see when you were most recently on Instagram. Only people you follow or have previously had direct conversations (DMs) with will see how many minutes or hours ago you were online. This feature makes sense for Instagram users who rely on the service to chat with businesses or creative professionals and want to see whether they're online or even quickly respond.

If you do a lot of chatting on Facebook and Messenger, whether in the apps or online, being able to disable the Active Status feature is something you may want to do at some point. Let yourself browse and peruse for as long as you like without being bothered by just changing your status.

By India Today Web Desk: When using the Facebook Messenger chat, you can turn your active status 'on' or 'off'. Many of us who do not want the public to know our active status 'on' or whether we are online, can turn it off manually.

Facebook chat and messages allow you to communicate privately with your friends on Facebook. Unlike the other things you share on Facebook, such as status updates or photos, chats and messages will not be shared with all of your friends or posted on your Timeline.
